Artists to Antarctica Programme

Antarctica

The Programme is open to applications from serious scholars of the humanities including writers, illustrators, musicians, photographers, sculptors, choreographers and anyone who beleives their art fits the criteria. Successful applicants will travel to Antarctica for up to two weeks and will visits sites appropriate to their artistic discipline.

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
Applications for the Artists to Antarctica Programme close with Antarctica New Zealand on the 1st March each year.

Application Assessment Criteria

The applicants should be prominent in their chosen field. Prominence is measured by reviews of previous work, appointments to academic or professional positions, honours and awards, peer review and examples of the work itself.
The application should demonstrate artistic flair and innovation

The applicants should provide a clearly conceived plan about how, as a result of their visit to Antarctica, a significant artistic work or series of works will be achieved. The creative work should be accessible to a large and primarily New Zealand audience. Applications should be accompanied by commitments in writing from publishers, broadcasters, and galleries and so forth as appropriate.

Finances

Antarctica New Zealand will generally bear the costs of transport between Antarctica and Christchurch, living costs at Scott Base (except food), vehicle and transport costs in Antarctica, field accommodation, some field equipment, e-mail communications, transfers in Christchurch and training.
Creative New Zealand will support artists for the Artists to Antarctica Programme with assistance of up to $9000 to cover materials, travel and living expenses while working on Antarctic related projects after their return from Antarctica. Creative New Zealand will also provide up to $1000 before the Antarctic visit to aid artists in travel to, and accommodation in, Christchurch prior to departure.
