Walnut panelled blanket chest, 1994
Flared outwards from top to bottom, and with an up-sweeping detail on the ends of the top, this chest borrows from some elements of traditional Chinese domestic furniture.
The panels on this particular piece were all cut from the same flitch, and had perhaps the most striking figure I have ever come across in New Zealand grown walnut, and was one of the pieces that I would very much liked to have kept for myself.
However, it was the first purchase from me, at a furniture exhibition in Christchurch, of a man who subsequently became a very good client over a number of years. I have made several more versions of this style of chest.
