I have worked full time as a designer and craftsman of solid wood furniture since 1984. The art of crafting finely wrought and functionally well-resolved pieces of furniture has been, and remains, an absorbing and demanding practise. In furniture of any interest, there is always some tension between the practical and the aesthetic aspects, and bringing these into some resonant harmony is the challenge, wonderful when it works.

The Signature rocking chair pictured here was first made in 1990, subsequently refined, and now my most successful piece, with examples to be found in many parts of the world, from Los Angeles to New York, and from Maine to Georgia in the U.S., throughout Europe and the U.K. and around the Pacific from Hong Kong to Perth, as well as the length and breadth of New Zealand. This example was built from European Maple, or Sycamore, and photographed in 1994 by the late Lloyd Park of Christchurch, a peerless photographer and a sadly missed great friend.
