Capital Conference 2002
Hosted by the Wellington Embroiderers' Guild.

Wellington 5/11 July 2002.

Exhibitions
An exhibition opening launches the conference events on the evening of Friday, 5 July. This is to be held in the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, on Wellington’s waterfront. All exhibitions will be at this venue and will include:
1. an open exhibition, for members and non-members
2. a miniature exhibition, for members and non-members
3. a members’ only exhibition
4. a children / young persons’ exhibition
There will also be supplementary displays of specific embroideries.

The Biennial General Meeting of the ANZEG will be held in the Student Union building of Victoria University on the Saturday and Sunday, 6 & 7 July. This is specifically for ANZEG members but at this same venue will be a Merchants Mall with approximately 25 retailers with the latest of embroidery and auxiliary materials, books etc, plus some others of an interesting related nature. There will also be a large display of guild work from our 61 separate guilds throughout the country.

During this weekend, ie 6 & 7 July, will be local tours around historical and significant areas of Wellington, including embroidery related visits; and possibly some during the following week too.

Saturday evening will be our conference dinner, eat, talk and be entertained!!

On Sunday morning, for the early risers, there will be a church service for conference attendees at Old St Pauls Cathedral, one of NZ’s significant early wooden churches. Both the Old St Pauls and the ‘new’ St Pauls Cathedral will have displays of church embroidery and linen during the time of the conference.

During the week 8 - 11 July ie Monday to Thursday inclusive, will be a series of embroidery and allied textile craft workshops at Wellington Girls College, in Thorndon, a central historical area of Wellington. The specific workshop titles are not yet available as tutors’ proposals are expected in by 31 March 2001. We hope to have a varied and stimulating series of one, two and three day workshops, with mini lectures (coffee lectures) during the lunch break. There will be a meet-the-tutors function on Sunday evening.

During the time of the workshops, we plan to have major, open to the public, lectures in the early evenings, either at the Academy of Fine Arts amongst the exhibits or perhaps at the Wellington Girls’ College Assembly Hall.

For overseas visitors we are currently communicating with an Auckland tour coordinator, Toucan Tours, who will be preparing a national tour which will depart from Auckland (most overseas visitors arrive in Auckland) come down south to Wellington and on the way visit major scenic attractions as well as visit embroidery people and other related interests. The tour will break in Wellington for conference and workshops etc, and then continue down to the South Island for further visits etc.

New Zealand in July is of course in its winter mode, however, we have a temperate climate and warm clothing, coats etc will see you through. Most of our public buildings are heated. Temperatures could range between 10 - 15oC.

Our currency of course is the New Zealand dollar and tipping is never required. We hope this information will encourage you to come and join us in this stimulating and exciting event. We will forward further information in October when we have our workshops planned, national tours arranged and other planning finalised. In the meantime, if there is any further information you require please do not hesitate to contact us. We hope you are able to join us.

Yours sincerely
