Dowse Art Museum Exterior

The Dowse Art Gallery, which opened in 1971, was named after Percy and Mary Dowse, former Mayor and Mayoress of the City. In 1982 a major extension to the original building was added and the building was renamed the Dowse Art Museum. Today the museum is widely recognised for its extensive collection of contemporary New Zealand craft.

The Dowse collection features work in glass, ceramic, wood, textile and metal, body adornment, photography, works on paper, sculpture and contemporary furniture.

The Dowse runs a regularly changing exhibition programme that reflects the museum collection. Exhibitions exploring contemporary social issues are also presented. Most exhibitions are mounted for 10 weeks with a major thematic show in the museum wing running for up to 10 months. The museum's education officers prepare and provide stimulating programmes for visitors and groups including schools and people with special needs.

Admission to the museum is free, although special exhibition charges occasionally apply. A koha or donation is welcome.

The museum is open every day of the year.
Monday - Friday 10am to 4pm
Weekends and Public Holidays 11am to 5pm

The Dowse Art Museum is a division of the City Services Group at the Hutt City Council. Centrally located in Lower Hutt, the museum is easily accessible by road and public transport.
