Aims
The interdisciplinary philosophy and approach of the visual arts programme is based on contemporary ways of working and the diverse cultural practices of our students. Our aim is to produce graduates who are willing to engage themselves and their work within the context of the wider community as socially and politically conscious individuals.

The school strongly supports a studio-oriented visual arts programme in which a close relationship between Studio Practice and Contextual Studies is seen as the basis from which excellence, versatility and diversity in the visual arts grow. Students learn research, investigate and problem-solving skills through Contextual Studies and Studio Practice research.

By mastering and being articulate in visual, verbal and written communication, students develop the critical faculties necessary to develop inquiring, broad attitudes. These future artists and designers will be aware of the need to continually review idea and previously held positions.

The school has a special commitment to Maori and Pacific Island students, for whom an elder system operates as a support network within the school.

Common to the visual arts programme is an underlying structure of personal growth and development. The open-endedness of learning is maintained in a structure of sequential development from lecturer-directed to self-directed and independent realisation.

The primary goal of the programme is to provide an academically vital basis for subsequent postgraduate studies. However, the student who does not choose to pursue this path will have received a comprehensive and challenging art and design education.

Inter-institutional Links
The Manukau Institute of Technology School of Art and Design is aligned with the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, through the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both institutes.

Student exchange agreements are in place with Konstfack University College of Art and Design, Stockholm, Sweden and the Duncan of Jordanstone College, University of Dundee, Scotland, which enable international experience to be credited to the Manukau Institute of Technology Bachelor of Visual Arts degree.
