Diploma in Ceramic Arts
This three year full-time course offers the best available advanced programme for ceramic students in New Zealand.
The course provides a structured programme of projects and demonstrations which are supported by lectures on ceramic history, the behaviour of ceramic materials, and kiln structures and operations. Drawing and research are pursued with all projects and are used for both inspiration and analysis.
Students are expected to create forms and images using both skill and intellectual energy. Projects allow students to research ideas and develop appropriate technical abilities, while encouraging personal aesthetic judgement and understanding of ceramic methods. Drawing, glaze technology, theory lectures and visiting ceramicists, all help provide a broad context for understanding technical, historical, educational and contemporary issues relevant to ceramics. The Diploma is recognised as a GIIIa qualification for entry to secondary teaching and teacher training in New Zealand.
At the end of the second year outstanding students may apply for entry into year three of the BFA degree.
