Bachelor of Design

Philosophy
The UNITEC Bachelor of Design is a generic degree with optional study majors, which emphasise the overall relationship between general design principles and imaginative responses to various design contexts.

Four years full time

Structure
The programme offers four major subjects:

  • Visual Communication Design - which includes graphic design, typography, computer imaging, photography, painting, animation and hypermedia
  • 3 Dimensional Design- which includes product design, ceramic design, jewellery/metals design, glass design, fibre/weaving and wood sculpture
  • Interior Design - which encompasses a broad field from theoretical to commercial, retail, hospitality, exhibition and other spatial formats.
  • Critical Studies - which includes art and design history, museum and gallery curatorial practice.

All students undertake a common first year of study which they must successfully complete before entering the major subject of their choice.

Career Opportunities
Most graduates seek employment directly upon graduating, either within established design practices or as freelance designers. Graduates may also set up their own design practices.

The Bachelor of Design degree also prepares graduates for employment in other than 'hands-on' design environments such as:

- Exhibition organisation
- Design co-ordination
- Consultancy or key participation in a
multi-disciplinary design team
- Design management
- Product development
- Information technology
- Design education
- Museums and galleries

Entry Requirements
Applicants to the Bachelor of Design programme must:

  • Have at least three C passes in the NZ University Bursary examination, or equivalent; or
  • Be a well prepared, motivated Sixth Form student with a maximum of 10 in the best four Sixth Form Certificate subjects. These applicants will be interviewed by the programme leader; or
  • be a person who does not hold the above qualifications but has attained the age of 20 years by 31 December in the year preceding enrolment.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, aptitude and commitment to learning art and design; and
  • have English language ability to a grade of 5 in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate, or an IELTS score of 6.5, or a TOEFL score of 575.

    Diploma in Design
    DipDes

    Philosophy
    The UNITEC Diploma in Design programme is intended to develop the student's potential through creative engagement with materials, media and technologies. In the early stages of the programme ideas are developed through plastic, solid and 2 dimensional expression in order to relate conceptual principles and 'making' skills to design activities.

    Three years full time

    Start Date
    15 February 1999

    Structure
    The Diploma in Design programme has areas of specialisation in product design, interior design and craft (jewellery/oblique metal, wood, oblique sculpture, ceramics, glass).

    Entry Requirements
    Applicants to the Bachelor of Design programme must:

  • Have a maximum of 16 in the best four Sixth Form Certificate subjects (with one subject in the design/art/crafts area), or equivalent; and
  • Have English language ability to a grade C in New Zealand School Certificate, or an IELTS score of 6.0, or a TOEFL score of 550.

    Entry Requirements
    Applicants to the Bachelor of Design programme must:

  • Have a maximum of 16 in the best four Sixth Form Certificate subjects (with one subject in the design/art/crafts area), or equivalent; and
  • have English language ability to a grade C in New Zealand School Certificate, or an IELTS score of 6.0, or a TOEFL score of 550.

    Applicants invited for an interview must be prepared to speak about their portfolio of work and voice opinions on which work is 'successful' and why.

    Programme Summary
    The programme is designed to enable students to move on to further education or employment in design-related fields, for example, desktop publishing, screenprinting, jewellery-making or furniture design.
