Whitireia Community Polytechnic is a government funded tertiary institution. Established in 1986, it is known for producing work-ready graduates who have found employment both in New Zealand and overseas.

There are two campuses the Porirua campus and the Kapiti campus. The School of Art is at the former.

The Porirua Campus sits at the edge of the scenic Porirua harbour. It is close to beaches where swimming, surfing and boating are popular recreational activities. It has easy access to banks, shopping complexes, art gallery, gymnasiums, restaurants and public transport. It is only 20km north of Wellington.
