Obituary - Tuti (Dutie) Tukaokao
Tutu (Dutie) Tukaokao the great master carver died June 6th at 6pm in Tauranga Hospital. He would have been 69 in September. His tribal affiliation is Ngati Ranginui, Arawa.

Honours Award
Congratulations to Garry Nash who was awarded a New Years Honours Award for his services to the art of glass making.
His studio Sunbeam Glass, often the workshop for aspiring glass artists, is the landmark glass studio in NZ. His fortitude, tenacity and creative spark has enabled him to hang on and develop that landmark - always with the support of his wife Anna.
It is a fine thing to have honoured another one of the hundreds of craft artists who should be thus honoured.

Call for Slides
A new book on surface design by Eloise Piper is underway. This will be a survey of outstanding surface design artists, their techniques, creative processes, and inspirations. Media will include various methods of weaving, dyeing, painting, printing, stitching, added embellishments (beading, metallic leaf, etc.) and other works of aesthetic excellence.
Artists are invited to submit 2 ½" or 1 ¼" slides or 4"x5" transparencies of 1-3 works. Please send 2-3 detail shots and a brief statement (400 words or less) about each piece submitted. Creative New Zealand is calling for applications from New Zealand visual artists for three international residencies: Sydney’s Artspace, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, and the International Studio Program in New York.

Artist in Residence Programme
Stewart House on South Curl Curl beach, Sydney, is introducing a program of residencies to begin this year, each for a period of ten weeks. Visual artists from all media and all stages of career have been invited to apply.
Stewart House is a charity, a school and hospital for disadvantaged children.
Applications for this year closed in November, but check it out for next year.

The final Kosovo Quilt Project Update

This is a story which should be on prime time TV. It was a story of empathy. Quilters all over our land who were able to relate to and empathise with the people of Kosovo.
This powerful response manifest itself in over 1200 quilts being created to take comfort and warmth (pyschological and practical) to hundreds of homeless.
