$10,000 national gold award

This $10,000 award provides an unprecedented opportunity for New Zealand jewellers to create a significant work in gold and achieve national and international recognition and exposure.

Dowse director Tim Walker says that the $10,000 award - offered every two years - provides an unprecedented opportunity for a New Zealand artist to create a significant work in gold and achieve national and international recognition and exposure.

"Many artists working in jewellery and body adornment never have the opportunity to work with a significant quantity of gold," says Walker. "There are very few major art awards in New Zealand. There are certainly not many that a jeweller can enter."

The Dowse has received support to offer The Gold Award from The Thomas Foundation, an Australian trust committed to developing the talent and creativity of Australian and New Zealand youth and artists.

Although relatively unknown in New Zealand, the Foundation is well known in Australia for its wide ranging support of the arts and the applied arts.

The winning artist receives $10,000 - roughly half of which is in gold and half cash.
