The Matamata Piako District with its three main centres Matamata, Morrinsville and Te Aroha spreads out at the foot of the Kaimai Ranges, east of the Waikato District. With its wide variety of landscapes ranging from wetlands, lush farming to dense bush and its quarry of Hinuera Stone it is home to sculptors, potters, bone/jade carvers, spinners and weavers, quilters, embroiderers, woodcrafters, papercraft artists and bookbinders and photograhers. The region has two art societies, a quilt and textile gallery, an art school and two art councils. Exhibitions, craft days and a sculpture symposium are held yearly.
