An abundance of artists, leatherworkers, woodworkers, weavers and various handcrafts reside in the surrounding countryside.

A recent exhibit, an extremely rare 2.7m tall kauri carving of a woman believed to have been carved with stone implements by the Waitaha (Waterside) people, centuries before the arrival of the Maori. it is believed to be the only one of its kind on public display. Carbon dating suggests it is around 2000 years old.
