Otorahanga District
Various forms of craft are practised throughout Otorohanga District by part-time craft workers. Many of them participate annually in the Art and Craft Expo held in Kawhia by Kawhia Regional Museum Gallery. The Otorohanga District Council operates the CCNZ scheme on a per-capita basis (district population 9600) and its assessment committee meets twice a year, usually in May and November, to consider applicants.
Crafts Sales outlets in the district are the CAVES CRAFT CO-OPERATIVE, which operates a shop in the main street of Otorohanga, TE PUTI CRAFTS on State Highway 31 a few kilometers from Kawhia, and the KAWHIA REGIONAL MUSEUM GALLERY on the waterfront in Kawhia itself. The museum is open from 12 to 4pm at weekends and public holidays in winter, and from Wednesday to Sunday, plus public holidays, from Labour weekend to Easter. It holds an annual Art and Craft Expo in March each year, with no entry fee and a $500 prize and substantial trophy in each category.
